The occupants of homes that are equipped with older models of home appliances will be well aware of how way they operate. The Environmental Protection Agency initiated the Energy Star symbol to denote home appliances that are energy efficient models. These home appliances are also good for the environment because they have been thoroughly tested for any emissions that might contribute to global warming. All household appliances that bear this rating have passed tests and been awarded with a low energy consumption rating. This award is hard to earn and homeowners put great value in choosing home appliances that bear this emblem.

Other markings that homeowners might find on home appliances will indicate that the appliance is energy efficient. The homeowner must make a decision on whether the cost of the appliance is more important than the energy savings that will be realized when they install the unit in the home. Some budget standards will not allow homeowners to buy all home appliances with Energy Star ratings, but some could be on sale, which would make them more affordable.
